Typically when someone asks me this question, I give them one of three answers; the first is the Urban Dictionary definition:“a small, unintended defecation that occurs when one relaxes the anal sphincter to pass gas.

”I follow that immediately with a wink and my most favorite answer:“It’s gas with mass!”

That’s usually the point where no further explanation is needed – but there are some folks who understand it best when given the third answer:

shit + fart = shart
